A ride like no other

Your ride pulls up to the curb. The doors open and you hop in. You relax into your seat, buckle up, and you’re on your way.  

The experience may sound familiar, but there’s one big difference: for this particular ride, there’s no driver. In fact, this vehicle has been designed for riders, not drivers. And that changes a lot of things.

When Zoox started out in 2014, we knew there was a better way to move around cities than the status quo. So we began engineering a new kind of vehicle in the hardest way possible—from scratch. We took complete control over the entire design process, to seamlessly bring together the software and hardware needed for fully autonomous driving. And we built the whole experience around, well, riders like you.

A better way to get around

Why are we starting from scratch? Because we believe that the current model of individually-owned, human-driven vehicles is broken. 

Let’s focus on the first bit: individually-owned. In the US, millions of us own cars that barely get driven. In fact, the average car is only in use about 4% of the time.1

Conversely, driving takes up a lot of our time—particularly for those of us living in cities. We spend a collective 400 billion hours driving each year.2 A lot of the time, we’re not even getting anywhere: we’re just sitting in traffic, or searching for parking, which accounts for one third of urban traffic.3 It’s no wonder that a quarter of air pollution in the US is caused by transportation.4

Then there’s safety. 94% of car crashes are caused by human error.5 Globally, car crashes take the lives of almost 4,000 people a day.6

All this led us toward our vision. By replacing individual ownership, and taking the human driver out of the equation, Zoox can benefit everyone. Safer roads. Better traffic flow. Lower emissions. It all goes together.

And you, the rider, get more time and space to do—well, whatever you want. It’s a radically different approach, but our purpose-built robotaxis are almost ready to kick off a new era of mobility.

Your space, your journey

So, what’s it like to ride in a Zoox?

Picture a very different kind of commute. While Zoox handles the traffic, you catch up on emails, read, or take a breather before a busy day. There’s no human driver, so the space is all yours.

Or maybe you’re headed somewhere fun with friends. Except now, there’s no need for a designated driver, and no one crammed in the back seat. Your night out starts the moment you step inside. 

How do you hail a Zoox? Easy. It works like any other ride-hailing app. The vehicle detects your location as it arrives. Then, your phone unlocks the automatic doors, which open parallel to the sidewalk. Hop inside. Settle in. Take off.

The first thing you’ll notice in your Zoox is the carriage seating. All four seats face each other and they’re equally safe and comfortable. The layout also makes it easy for everyone to chat.

You can also personalize your trip once you get going. Choose the music, change the temperature, or adjust the lighting. (We’re especially fond of the starry ceiling lights.) You can charge your phone wirelessly. Or check your arrival time on the touchscreen next to each seat. It’s the little details that make a big difference.

It’s taken a lot of hard work to get to this point. But now we’re almost ready to bring Zoox to you.
