The Senior Staff Operational Safety Manager will lead our operational and field safety initiatives across Zoox teams and drive the continuous improvement of our hardware and software through field experience feedback processes. You and your team will be responsible for spearheading development and implementing effective customer-focused safety processes commensurate with Zoox’s safety innovative leadership.
 
As the Senior Staff Operational Safety Manager, you will continually evaluate field safety operations and define and implement processes that are repeatable across different vehicles and locations as Zoox continues to scale (locations, teams, fleets) to ensure the highest level of safety in operations. You will continually improve our lessons learned from all operations and incidents, including working closely on complex issues with our Operations, Vehicle Engineering, Safety Design, Software, Hardware, and Legal teams to ensure a rigorous, disciplined, risk-based approach.
 
The role will involve managing a small team of Operations, Safety, and Field Safety personnel and with responsibility for hiring, training, and providing day-to-day oversight to the team. A successful candidate will be able to support other Zoox safety efforts including Safety Management System, Safety Planning, Compliance, and Policy activities.

Responsibilities

  • Actively direct, manage and supervise Zoox’s Operational Safety Programs, including innovating to create new components commensurate with Zoox’s safety leadership while operating cross-functionally with other organizations
  • Facilitate, design, and implement operational safety policies and diligent risk management programs for operations, SW & HW product/operational safety improvement, and testing across vehicle fleets (L3 and L5), including vehicle and operations safety training
  • Lead and continuously improve our incident response, incident investigation, and lessons learned/feedback programs, as well as our first responder programs
  • Ensure that relevant operational safety metrics are rigorously set, tracked, reported, and used by internal stakeholders to systematically assess and manage complex safety risks and improve our product safety for customers
  • Assist with formal reviews of the Field Safety Operations program with executive leadership and present data findings and areas of improvement
  • Define criteria and gates for readiness of test and operations deployments
  • Champion strong safety culture at Zoox, and represent Zoox with key external stakeholders and organizations
  • Support the continuing development and implementation of a successful safety management system (SMS). 

Qualifications

  • 10+ years of experience in the AV, Automotive, Aviation, or Robotics industries, with experience leading safety-critical systems or operations
  • Proven ability to theorize, create, and implement safety programs, ideally in the AV, Robotics, or Transportation industries
  • Extensive automotive safety knowledge, risk management experience, and experience building operational safety programs, with experience in Functional Safety and SOTIF methodology
  • Strong influence and communication skills with all levels of management, including proven ability to collaborate to achieve multiple simultaneous goals for the organization
  • Strong management experience and skills, with the ability to guide others to accomplish complex programs and tasks
  • Continuously remains aware of AV safety trends and ideally is a thought-leader in AV industry standards, or is an actively participating member of professional engineering or safety organizations
  • BS in Engineering, Masters preferred; may consider other degrees in a technical or safety-related field

Bonus Qualifications

  • PhD/Advanced degree in Engineering, Management or other transportation safety-related field
  • Membership or participation in professional societies or industry standards activities
  • Certification in Safety or Automotive systems
