As Thermal Controls Engineer you will be responsible to develop the controls strategies that bring the thermal system to life and to refine those controls to a customer-ready state. You, along with the rest of the Thermal Systems Integration team, will be responsible for keeping people and components in their ideal operating temperature. The models, estimators, and algorithms you develop will be an important part of making Zoox robots work day to day over their lifespan and directly impact our customers with a comfortable and inviting cabin. You will take controls from concept to Simulink code and participate in the implementation into firmware, and then test and refine those algorithms through physical testing.
Lead strategic development of thermal control algorithms, models and estimators for cabin HVAC, high voltage battery, powertrain and specialized autonomous vehicle components.
Develop models of the thermal systems to test and improve control strategies.
Use simulation and test tools to assess controls performance and impacts to systems and attributes.
Work cross functionally to test, debug and release controls algorithms into Zoox firmware.
Work cross-functionally to develop a full suite of thermal sensors and actuators to enable the desired functionality and control.
BS or higher in ME/EE or Controls Engineering or equivalent.
More than 5 years experience with controls system development, modeling, and implementation.
Experience in linear systems analysis, state estimation, and controller design.
Fundamental understanding of thermal system components like chillers, evaporators, coolant and refrigerant pumps, radiators, fans, actuators, etc.
Demonstrated proficiency creating dynamic models of thermal, mechanical and hydraulic systems.
Able to work with physical test assets, like bucks or actual robots, to evaluate and refine controller designs.
Experience with model development and data analysis in Matlab/Simulink.
